Does your Pet need a Seatbelt or Harness?
Here in Colorado we are having back to back snowstorms. The roads have become icy and snow packed. This morning the news was full of one vehicle accidents involving rollovers. I know that we all know that our kids and selves must be buckled in. Why? So they don't go through the window, or out the car door or get slammed into something in the car. A flight attendant told me they call babies held in their parents laps during flight "lap rockets". If the plane loses altitude quickly the parents can't keep a hold of them. What is different about our pets? Not a thing! They need to have us make good decisions for them. I prefer a crate or harness set up over a leash attached to their collar. The harness works the same for pets as it does for small children. It diffuses the impact over a greater area. My dogs have always been family and we need to think of them as such. Many of us are good drivers, but we can't count on the drivers in the vehicles around us. Start when your puppy first rides along with you. If you are consistent, they won't put up a fuss. Take it easy on the road. I have always felt that there is nowhere I am going that is worth risking my life or the lives of my family.
